Merino Wool for Newborns: What Parents Should Know
Dressing a newborn can feel surprisingly complicated. Are they warm enough? Too warm? Do they need another layer? And what happens when the temperature changes throughout the day?
This is one of the reasons we love merino wool for little ones. Soft, breathable and naturally temperature-regulating, merino is a beautiful natural fibre for creating simple, comfortable layers from the very beginning.
If merino wool is new to you, here is our simple guide to using it in your baby's first wardrobe.

Why merino wool for newborns?
Newborns are still developing their ability to regulate body temperature, which makes thoughtful layering particularly important during those first months.
Merino wool has a wonderful ability to respond to changing conditions. Its fibres can help manage heat and moisture around the body, while remaining breathable and comfortable to wear.
Unlike the thick, scratchy wool many of us remember from childhood, fine merino wool can feel remarkably soft against the skin.
When can a newborn wear merino wool?
Merino isn't only for the coldest winter days.
Depending on the garment weight, the other layers being worn and the surrounding temperature, merino can be useful throughout much of the year. It works beautifully as a cosy layer in colder weather, but its breathability also makes it useful when temperatures fluctuate.
Think of merino less as a heavy winter fabric and more as a smart natural layer.

How should you layer merino wool?
There isn't one perfect outfit for every baby or every temperature. Your baby's age, activity, environment and the other fabrics they are wearing all matter.
Instead of relying on one very thick garment, we prefer simple, adjustable layers. They make it easier to add warmth when you step outside and remove a layer when you come back indoors.
A SIMPLE KALLIEBABY LAYERING IDEA
Choose a soft layer appropriate for the temperature and your baby's needs.
A SnuggleSuit Onesie or PureComfort Trousers can add gentle warmth without creating an unnecessarily bulky outfit.
Our CosyTie Cardigan makes an easy additional layer that can simply be removed when your little one gets warmer.
TinyToes Socks and a Snuggle Beanie can add extra warmth when the weather calls for it.
How do I know if my baby is too warm or too cold?
Rather than judging by your baby's hands or feet alone, check their chest, back or the back of their neck. These areas can give you a better indication of how warm they actually feel.
If your baby feels hot, sweaty or clammy, remove a layer. If their chest or back feels cool, consider adding one.
Every baby is different, so use clothing guides as a starting point rather than a strict rule. When in doubt, follow the advice of your healthcare professional.
“The beauty of layering is that you don't need to predict the whole day. You can simply adjust as your baby's surroundings change.”
What about sleeping?
Merino wool can be used in products designed specifically for baby sleep, but sleep requires some extra care.
A baby's sleepwear should always be chosen according to the room temperature and the safety guidance for the specific sleep product being used. Avoid simply adding layers because your baby's hands feel cool, and take care not to overdress your baby for sleep.
For sleep, always follow current safe-sleep guidance applicable in your country and the instructions provided with your baby's sleepwear or sleeping bag.
Does merino wool need to be washed after every wear?
Usually, no - and this is another reason we love it.
Wool naturally resists odour, so if a piece is still clean, airing it between wears may be all it needs. Of course, newborn life comes with milk spills, dribbles and plenty of little accidents, so washing will still be part of the routine.
When it is time for a wash, merino simply needs a little more care than an everyday cotton T-shirt.

Why we chose RWS-certified merino wool
At KallieBaby, every merino piece is made from 100% RWS-certified merino wool.
RWS stands for the Responsible Wool Standard. The standard includes requirements relating to sheep welfare and land management, while providing a chain of custody for certified wool through the supply chain.
For us, choosing the fibre was never only about how beautiful it feels. We also wanted to be thoughtful about where our wool comes from.

A smaller wardrobe can go a long way
Babies grow incredibly quickly. That is why we don't believe their first wardrobe needs to be enormous.
A few thoughtfully chosen pieces that work together can create plenty of combinations: an onesie, cardigan and trousers for everyday wear, with socks, a beanie and blanket ready when a little extra warmth is needed.
Our pieces are intentionally designed with a slightly more generous fit, allowing room for growth and helping each garment stay in your baby's wardrobe for a little longer.
And once it no longer fits?
We hope it can be washed, folded and passed on to another little one.
